How to read this table

Jokers. A standard game needs 8. Most sets include 10, which gives you spares. A set with no jokers is a Chinese set.

Tile height. Standard American tiles are about 1.2 to 1.25 inches tall. Travel tiles can be as small as 3/4 inch, which is harder to read across a table.

Racks. American players use racks with pushers. Designer sets usually sell them separately, so budget roughly $100 to $175 more.

Buying guides

Questions about these sets

Which mahjong set should I buy?

For a first set, a complete American starter set with racks. If you already play weekly, a designer set is a nice upgrade. Use the filters above to compare.

What does "American play: Ready" mean in the table?

The seller's published breakdown includes at least 8 jokers and 8 flowers plus all the suit, wind and dragon tiles, so the set covers a standard National Mah Jongg League game.

Why does one set say "Check counts"?

Its listing does not break down the tiles, so we cannot confirm the jokers and flowers. Ask the seller before you buy.

Where do these prices come from?

From each seller's own product page on the date shown. Prices change often, sometimes daily.

Do you test the sets?

Not yet. We compare published specifications and say so on each page. We will add hands-on notes as we test sets.

Do you earn money from these links?

Some links may become affiliate links. That never changes a set's readiness verdict, which comes only from its published tile counts. How we make money.
