Mahjong racks and pushers: sizes, materials and what to buy

American mahjong is played on racks. Getting the right length for your tiles matters more than the material.

What racks and pushers do

  • The rack holds your tiles upright facing you, with a ledge on top for exposures.
  • The pusher is the arm or bar you use to slide your wall toward the center of the table.
  • You need four, one per player. Many starter sets include them; most designer sets sell them separately.

Length: match it to your tiles

Each player's wall is 19 tiles long (two high) in a 152-tile game, and the rack has to be long enough to push it. Mahjong maker Miss Mahjong gives these guidelines:

TilesRack length
Standard tiles (about 1.2 in tall)About 18 to 18.5 in is generally enough
Large tiles (about 1 7/16 in tall), 152-tile gameAt least 19 in
Large tiles, 160-tile gameAbout 20 in (one extra stack per wall)

Materials

MaterialGoodWatch out for
PlasticCheap and lightSlides on a mat, often 18.5 in or shorter, not ideal for thick tiles
AcrylicHeavy and stable, looks greatScratches more easily, costs more
WoodClassic and sturdyCan chip or dent

Pushers: magnetic or hinged

  • Magnetic pushers detach, push the wall further, are heavier so they slide less, and tend to last longer.
  • Hinged pushers are built into the rack, lighter and cheaper, and more likely to slide. They are common on plastic racks.

Rack bags and storage

Racks are long and awkward to store. A rack bag or sleeve keeps all four together and protects acrylic from scratches. Measure your racks first: bags are sold by length.

Common questions

Do you need racks to play American mahjong?

Yes, in practice. Each player needs a rack to hold their tiles upright and hidden, and a pusher makes it easy to move your wall forward. A full game needs four.

What length mahjong rack do I need?

It depends on tile size. Racks around 18 to 18.5 inches suit standard tiles. Larger tiles, about 1 7/16 inches tall, need at least 19 inches for a 152-tile game, and about 20 inches if you play with 160 tiles.

What is a mahjong pusher?

A long arm attached to the rack, or a separate bar, that you use to push your wall of tiles toward the center of the table so others can draw from it.

Magnetic or hinged pushers?

Magnetic pushers detach, are heavier and slide less. Hinged pushers are lighter, cheaper and common on plastic racks.
