How we picked. We have not tested these sets by hand yet. These picks are based on the sellers' published specs and shopper ratings, checked on October 31, 2026. We will update this page as we test sets in person.

What a first set needs

  • At least 8 jokers and 8 flowers. Most American sets have 10 jokers. No jokers means a Chinese set.
  • Four racks with pushers. Buying them separately can add $100 or more.
  • Standard-size tiles, about 1.2 inches tall, so everyone can read them across the table.
  • Western numbers and letters on the tiles, which make the craks and winds easier to learn.
  • A case or bag if you will carry it to other people's homes.

You also need a current card for each player, which is sold separately.

Three starter sets

ZenSports American Mahjong Set

$67.98 at Walmart

The lowest price in our list for a complete set: 166 tiles with 10 jokers, four racks with pushers, chips, dice and a padded case. It had 4.5 stars from 377 shopper ratings when we checked.

Worth knowing: Melamine tiles, and the seller does not say whether tiles carry Western numerals. Fit the racks the right way round or the pushers will not lie flat.

Yellow Mountain Imports Harbor Snow American Mahjong Set

$149.99 at Yellow Mountain Imports

A step up in the details that matter at the table: wooden racks with magnetic pushers, and Western letters and numerals on every tile, which helps beginners who do not read Chinese characters.

Worth knowing: Melamine tiles. Backordered when we checked. Scorecards are not included.

Yellow Mountain Imports Glacier Blue American Mahjong Set

$218.99 at Yellow Mountain Imports

Acrylic tiles, wooden racks and the same easy-to-read markings, for about half the price of a designer set before racks.

Worth knowing: Backordered when we checked. Scorecards are not included.

What about designer sets?

Designer sets from brands such as Oh My Mahjong, Miss Mahjong and My Fair Mahjong cost about $375 to $425 for the tiles alone, with racks extra. They play exactly the same game. Are they worth it?

Common questions

What is the best mahjong set for a beginner?

A complete American set with at least 8 jokers and 8 flowers, four racks with pushers, and readable tiles with Western numerals. Starter sets from about $70 to $220 tick all the boxes.

How much should I spend on my first mahjong set?

You do not need to spend more than about $70 to $220 for a complete set with racks. Designer sets at $375 and up are a treat for later.

Should I buy a set before my first lesson?

No. Teachers bring sets to beginner classes. Play a few times first, then buy.

Is a 166-tile set better than a 160-tile set?

Neither is better. Both include the 152 tiles you play with, plus spares. 166-tile sets usually have extra flowers; 160-tile sets extra blanks.

Are melamine tiles OK?

Yes. Most starter sets use melamine. It is durable and keeps costs down; acrylic and resin are mostly about look and feel.

Do beginners need large tiles?

Not necessarily, but larger tiles and Western numerals make learning easier, especially for players who find small print hard to read.
