Common questions

Can I use any mahjong set for American mahjong?

Only if it has at least 8 jokers and 8 flowers along with the standard suits, winds and dragons. Chinese and Japanese sets usually do not.

My set has 144 tiles. Will it work?

Probably not as is. A 144-tile set is almost always Chinese, with flowers but no jokers.

My set has only a few jokers. What can I do?

Use joker stickers on blank tiles to make up the difference to 8. If you do not have enough blanks, you would need to buy matching blank tiles.

Do I need racks?

For American mahjong, yes in practice: one per player, ideally with pushers.

Does the checker save my answers?
