American vs Chinese mahjong sets: how to tell them apart

The short answer: count the jokers. American sets have them, Chinese sets do not, and you cannot play American mahjong without at least eight.

The differences that matter

American setChinese set
Total tilesUsually 160 or 166Usually 144 to 148
Jokers8 to 10None
Racks with pushersUsually included in starter setsUsually not included
Numbers on tilesUsually Western numerals and letters in the cornerOften Chinese characters only
Playable rulesAmerican, and Chinese if you set the jokers asideChinese only

For example, one retailer's 148-tile Chinese set has no jokers and puts Western numerals only on its flower tiles; the retailer itself says it is not compatible with American rules (see the listing details). Its American sets of 166 tiles include 10 jokers and Western letters and numerals on every tile.

How to check a listing

  1. Search the description for "joker". No jokers, no American play.
  2. Check the tile count. Under 152 is not enough.
  3. Look for the words "American", "Western" or "NMJL". "Traditional" or "Chinese" usually means no jokers.
  4. Check whether racks and pushers are included or sold separately.

Or use the set checker to get a yes or no in three questions.

Already bought a Chinese set?

It may be possible to convert it. Joker stickers are sold for exactly this, and players stick them onto blank tiles to make jokers. The catch is numbers: you need 8 jokers, and many Chinese sets come with only about 4 blanks, so you may have to buy extra blank tiles that match your set's size. You will also need racks if your set did not include them. If that adds up to more than a starter American set, buying the right set is simpler.

Common questions

How can I tell if a mahjong set is American?

Count the jokers. American sets have at least 8; Chinese sets have none. American sets also usually have Western numerals on the tiles and come with racks.

How many tiles are in a Chinese mahjong set?

Usually 144, including 8 flowers and seasons, and no jokers. Some sets add a few blanks.

Can I convert a Chinese set to American?

Sometimes. You need 8 jokers, which means joker stickers on blank tiles, and many Chinese sets have only about 4 blanks. You also need racks. Add up the cost before you start.

Are Chinese mahjong tiles bigger?

Often. Many Chinese sets have larger, thicker tiles than American starter sets, so they may not fit American racks.

Do American sets have Chinese characters?

Yes. The craks, winds and dragons keep their Chinese characters, but American sets add Western numerals and letters in the corners.

Is a "Western" mahjong set the same as an American set?

Not necessarily. Some sets sold as Western are Chinese sets with numerals added but no jokers. Check the joker count.
